As they say “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” Beauty can’t be judged objectively, for what one person finds beautiful or admirable may not appeal to another. And ideals of beauty also tend to vary significantly across the globe. A study conducted by the U.K. online pharmacy, Superdrug Online Doctors, appears to confirm this notion. Given that widely held perceptions of beauty and perfection can have a deep cultural impact on both women and men, the goal of this study was to better understand potentially unrealistic standards of beauty and to see how such pressures vary around the world.
18 graphic artists from around the world were commissioned to Photoshop the same exact female form into a shape that their culture would find attractive. They were allowed to modify clothing while keeping the form visible. All other changes, including those to the females’ shape and form were left up to the designers. The project focused on female designers (most of which were contracted via freelance job boards), as they wanted a woman’s view of what her culture finds attractive and to understand more about the pressures they face.
